Subsea Fibre Optic Cable EPCIC – 110 km Offshore Field Link

Poseidon Offshore Energy was engaged to deliver a full EPCIC scope for the installation of a 110 km subsea fibre optic cable system connecting an offshore production field to the onshore facility.

The project included one branching unit (BU) to interconnect the main line with two offshore platforms, providing real-time data communication and control integration across multiple assets.
The scope encompassed engineering design, cable manufacturing, load-out, transportation, installation, trenching/burial, shore landing, platform pull-in, termination, and final testing. Operations were executed in water depths ranging from shallow coastal zones to over 70 m, requiring careful interface management between shore and offshore operations.

Task

Poseidon Offshore Energy provided end-to-end project management and installation engineering support throughout the project lifecycle, including:

Full EPCIC Project Management: Interface coordination among client, cable manufacturer, and multiple subcontractors.
Installation Engineering: Dynamic cable lay analysis, allowable tension validation, and weather-window assessment.
Route Engineering: Definition and validation of the cable route, including seabed assessment and crossing evaluation.
Project Engineering: Preparation of method statements, procedures, risk assessments, and offshore execution support.

Challenges

Tight schedule coordination between cable manufacturing and vessel readiness, requiring concurrent engineering and logistics planning.
Complex nearshore pull-in in shallow, surf-zone conditions demanding precise winch tension control and vessel positioning.
Cable burial optimisation to ensure target burial depth across varying soil conditions without overstressing the fibre.

The Solution

Poseidon’s project management and engineering team ensured proper interface management and coordination among all stakeholders to finalise the cable design, oversee manufacturing progress, and prepare all technical and procedural documentation ahead of mobilisation.

The engineering team utilised OrcaFlex for full dynamic analysis of the cable during lay operations, verifying allowable sea states and curvature limits. A combined onshore–offshore engineering approach enabled real-time decision-making during installation, supported by pre-validated procedures, deck layout reviews, and installation readiness assessments.

A detailed Catenary and Lay-Tension Analysis Package was developed to ensure safe installation within the vessel’s operational envelope. Close collaboration between Poseidon’s engineers, the client, and the offshore construction team allowed continuous optimisation of operational parameters, improving reliability and reducing offshore risk exposure.

Comprehensive documentation, including design reports, fabrication drawings, and method statements, ensured constructability, traceability, and compliance with offshore lifting and seafastening standards.
